Tulane Starts Notre Dame Inv. with Strong Singles Play

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Tulane women's tennis team officially kicked off the 2014-15 season at the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Indiana. Day one featured competitors from Tulane, Louisville, Purdue, Akron, Illinois, and host Notre Dame clashing in two flights of doubles matches and one round of doubles. Junior Ipek Birol highlighted day one action of the three day tournament, being the lone Green Wave player to claim victory in both singles and doubles
Birol teamed with senior transfer Nicky Stracar in both flights of doubles. In the first round, Birol/Stracar dominated Akron's Geier/Newnes, shutting the duo out, 8-0. Later on, the Illini tandem of Kwong/Tapak would get the best of Birol/Stracar, 8-4.
In singles, Birol earned a hard fought three set win over Illinois' Jerricka Boone. After dropping the first set 6-4, Birol rallied to claim the next two sets, 6-3, 6-3.
Despite some troubles in doubles, the Green Wave proved to be resilient in singles play, picking up four total victories on the day. Earning their first wins in a Tulane uniform were sophomore Kyla Klier and freshman Naz Karagoz. Klier downed Akron's Shannon Newnes, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4, while Karagoz best Julia Jamieson of Illinois, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
Rounding out the Tulane singles victories was senior Emily Dvorak, who like her fellow teammates, took her opponent, Alaina Roberts of Notre Dame, to three sets. After cruising to a 6-2 first set, Roberts countered with a 6-5 win in second. Unfazed, Dvorak rolled in the third, clinching 6-0.
