SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Tulane women's tennis team wrapped play Sunday morning at the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Indiana. The Green Wave finished the three day tournament by competing in one singles match this morning at the Courtney Tennis Center, with Meredith Maltby and Ipek Birol capturing victories for Tulane.
"Amazing weekend overall," stated Tulane head coach Terri Sisk. "Going to this level of a tournament we wanted to see where we stood against top-30 teams. I was blown away with the level of which we competed, out there with a completely new group of girls, some competing for the first time. Every day we got progressively better."
Birol capped off a great opening weekend with a 6-0, 7-6(5) win over Notre Dame's Julie Vrabel. The junior went 2-1 in singles play and 3-1 in doubles, posting the most combined victories out of any Green Wave competitor. Birol teamed with senior Nicky Stracar in doubles and defeated duos from Notre Dame, Purdue, and Akron.
"I was blown away with what Ipek did," said Tulane head coach Terri Sisk. "Probably her best tournament that she's had at Tulane. She's playing incredible tennis right now. If this is any indication what the spring is going to be about, Ipek is going to have an amazing year."
Maltby also earned a straight set victory over the Fighting Irish, defeating Katherine White, 6-3, 6-2. It marked her first win on the year. In addition, despite a 6-1, 6-2 loss today to Louisville's Ellie Gerlach, Emily Dvorak recorded a solid weekend, going 2-1 in singles play.
"We need to play those no-ad points a little smarter," Sisk said on what the team needs to work on. "With this strong of a start, even though we lost a few matches, our future is unbelievably bright. The best part is the team knows it too."
In all Tulane picked up eight total singles victories in 22 matches and four doubles wins.
Next up for the Green Wave is the ITA Southern Regional. The four day event takes place Oct. 10-13 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
