JONESBORO, Ark. - The 20th-ranked Tulane bowling team earned four wins and placed 11th out of 15 teams in the Arkansas State Mid-Winter Invitational over the weekend at the Jonesboro Bowling Center.
The Green Wave (37-30) picked up wins over No. 13 McKendree and fifth-ranked Sam Houston State during the two-day team competition. Tulane opened the weekend with a, 906-906, win in a tie-breaker against McKendree and then pulled off a, 935-918, victory over SHSU on Saturday.
The two other wins came in Sunday's bracket play against No. 15 Valparaiso. The Green Wave opened Sunday with a, 4-1, best-of-seven Baker format win and then defeated Valpo again, 4-0, to complete the weekend to finish 11th in the tournament.
"It was nice to get back to the lanes and for the most part the ladies bowled well this weekend," Tulane head coach Hayley Veitch said. "We had some nice wins, but we also left a few pins out there in games that we could have won. We have a lot to work on during practice before we compete again. I know we will get better."
Sophomore Angela Falgoust led Tulane individually with a 192.75 total pin average. She also rolled a team-high 238 against top-ranked Nebraska on Friday. Freshman Sarah Forton also bowled well with a 191.13 average that included a career-best 232 in the win over Sam Houston State on Saturday. Fellow freshman Michelle Ng posted a 190.90 average with four games over 200, including a 223 against Nebraska.
After this weekend, the Green Wave will return to the lanes for the Bethune-Cookman Wildcat Invitational in Ormond Beach, Fla., on Feb. 6-8.
