NEW ORLEANS - Looking to build a four-game win streak for the third time this season, the Tulane women's basketball team (14-3, 5-1 AAC) will conclude its two game home-stand with Tulsa (8-9, 3-3 AAC) on Tuesday night. The match will tip-off at 7 p.m. CT inside Devlin Fieldhouse and will air live on The American Digital Network.
Last week was all about the late dramatic wins for Tulane as they defeated UCF and SMU by a combined margin of three points. For their in-game efforts, Kolby Morgan was awarded the American Athletic Conference's Freshman of the Week while Danielle Blagg landed on the conference's Honor Roll list along with being named College Sports Madness' American Player of the Week.
"We've talked about playing more aggressive in the first half so we don't put ourselves in the position of having to pull it out in the end," Tulane head Coach Lisa Stockton said. "We've learned a lot these last two games but it certainly adds to the confidence of this team."
After a 16-point performance vs SMU, Blagg has continued her torrid start to conference play, as the senior leads the team with 11.7 points per game. In the last three games, the San Antonio native has tallied 48 total points on 17-of-32 shooting, and has sunk 11-of-19 from three point range, increasing her three point percentage from 31.3 percent to 37.3.
SMU also marked the second conference game in which Leslie Vorpahl spearheaded the Green Wave attack in the final minutes, recording six of the last eight points, including the go-ahead three-pointer. The sophomore previously had tallied 12 of the team's final 19 points at Cincinnati on Dec. 28.
Tulane's defense also recorded an invigorated second half performance vs the Mustangs. SMU went from shooting 42 percent in the first half to 28 percent in the second and didn't register a point in the final two minutes and 38 seconds. The Green Wave also tallied their second most steals on the year with 16.
"It was all about coming out with energy and in the first half (vs SMU) we played flat. Our identity is definitely defense and when we came out and played with better energy our defense picked up and worked for us," Danielle Blagg said.
Tuesday's clash with Tulsa will mark the 21st overall encounter between the two former Conference USA members, with Tulane holding the upper hand at 13-7 in the series. Tulsa is coming off of a 74-52 victory vs Houston this past Saturday.
The Golden Hurricane rank 46th nationally in three-point field goal percentage (35.3) 54th in steals (10.4), 56th in assists (15.3) and 60th in field goal percentage (43.1). Yet, Tulsa only averages just 33.4 rebounds per game with a -4.3 rebounding margin.
Leading the Tulsa attack is Ashley Clark (13.1 ppg), Mariah Turner (12.3 ppg) and Kelsee Grovey (10.6 ppg). Clark leads the team in rebounding with 7.1 boards per game while Turner leads with a .531 shooting percentage. Finally, Grovey has seen a spike in her scoring since conference play started, averaging 14.3 points per game.
