TUSCALOOSA - Sebastian Rey, Constantin Schmitz and Tyler Schick of the Tulane men's tennis team each displayed strong outings on Friday in day two of the ITA Southern Regionals. Rey and Schmitz not only advanced to the quarterfinals singles main draw, but also the doubles main draw as well. However, they were not alone in advancing in singles, as Schick will join them in the quarterfinals as well.
Rey and Schmitz certainly have carried over their momentum from their All-American Championships performances. The No. 5-8 seed in doubles, started the day by defeating Ole Miss' Gowda/Hamilton, 8-2, advancing to the Round of 16. In order to reach the quarterfinals, the pair will have to take down Samford's Carter/Gerch on Saturday.
The Round of 32 in singles witnessed Rey upset the No. 9-16 seed Grayson Goldin in a dramatic three-set finish, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(4). Next, Rey knocked off yet another seeded player when he defeated No. 8 Filip Kraljevic of Ole Miss in another three-set battle, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
"Seb had two great matches coming from a set down in both to take out some tremendous players," Tulane head coach Mark Booras stated. "He really had a nice disposition out there which allowed him to stay focused and play his game, especially when he was under so much pressure today."
Schick improved to 7-1 in singles, first besting Southern Miss' Rakshit Rishi, 6-1, 6-2. The freshman then continued to roll against Alabama's Nikko Madregallejo, defeating the host school's participant, 6-3, 6-3.
"Tyler did a great job taking care of business in his matches," Booras added. "I really like the way he competed and how well he responded under pressure to keep playing his game. It's nice to see that trait in a freshman."
Schmitz, a No. 9-16 seed, improved to 9-3 this fall after defeating Auburn's Dante Saleh, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. Schmitz then followed that up by defeating the No. 5 overall seed, Alabama's Korey Lovett, 6-4, 5-7, 7-5. Lovett was the ITA Southern Region Rookie of the Year last season, along with being named a SEC All-Freshmen Team selection.
"Constantin showed a lot of poise and character to come back from a break-down three different times in the 3rd set against a tough player, on his home courts, with a good bit of pressure from the fans," Booras explained. "I'm proud of the way he carried himself under that kind of pressure so he could execute his game."
In other action, Eric Wagner begun the first round of singles consolation on Friday, as the freshman downed Samford's Austin Heinz, 6-4, 7-6(5). However, Wagner then fell in the second round 6-3, 6-2, to Louisiana's Jake Wynan.
Finally, Saturday's action will feature two doubles and one singles round.
