KENNER, La. – Tulane's bowling squad had another solid day on the lanes during the conclusion of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Bowling Invitational at the AMF All-Star Lanes on Sunday, as the Green Wave went 2-1 on the day to jump into eighth place when all of the dust settled.
Coming into the final day seeded ninth, Tulane started off strong once again, defeating Bethune-Cookman, 4-0, and Jackson State, 4-2, in bracket play, before moving to the seventh/eighth place game vs. Prairie View A&M. However, the ladies couldn't hold up in the finale, as Prairie View defeated Tulane in straight games to end the day.
"Overall, I'm happy," stated Tulane bowling head coach Hayley Veitch. "Obviously, some things could have been better. I had a goal of being in the top-seven, but eighth place is just outside of that. Seventh place would've been nice, and if we had won that last match that's where we would've placed. We really fought hard, and those first two matches today went really well. I've seen some energy that I haven't seen in the past, so that is good for the future of our program."
Sam Houston State took home tournament champion honors for the second-consecutive year and the third time overall, as the Bearkats defeated Arkansas State in the finals, 4-2. The Red Wolves took second place, followed by Nebraska, who took third overall.
Vanderbilt (fourth), Stephen F. Austin (fifth), North Carolina A&T (sixth), Prairie View A&M (seventh), Jackson State (ninth), Texas Southern (10th), Louisiana Tech (11th), Bethune-Cookman (12th), Florida A&M (13th), Alabama State (14th) and Southern (15th) rounded out the field.
"We know what we have to work on," added Veitch. "The next two weeks are definitely going to be a little bit harder in terms of practices for us just so we can get everybody in better shape for the FDU NJ Jamboree tournament. Little things happened late for us with bowling balls, and we have to figure out how they react, but this was like an entry tournament for us. Our competition is definitely going to heighten over the next two weeks and over the rest of the season."
Sam Houston State's Heather Penatzer took home tournament MVP honors, joining fellow teammate Janine Kuwahara on the All-Tournament team. Jordan Richard (Arkansas State), Destiny Velez (Prairie View A&M), and Giselle Poss (Vanderbilt) were the other three All-Tournament team recipients.
As a team, the Green Wave went 8-6 for the tournament, knocking down 13,104 pins and averaging 177.1 pins per game. Individually, sophomore Michelle Ng paced Tulane with a 195.83 pin average in six games.
"Michelle Ng truly stood out for us again today," mentioned Veitch. "Michelle had to have a clutch 10th frame several times, and she pulled through, so she did well today."
Tulane will be back in action in two weeks, as the squad travels to New Brunswick, N.J., for the FDU NJ Jamboree from Oct. 30-Nov. 1.
