Tulane Hits the Road for Pair of Invitationals
Nov 18, 2015 | Women's Swimming and Diving

NEW ORLEANS -- Tulane's swimming & diving team is prepared for their first road contests in over a month. Both meets are three-day events and will take place Nov. 19-21. The squad will split up, with the swimmers heading to the annual Phill Hansel Invitational at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium in Houston. Tulane is no stranger to this meet, having attended several times since the program was brought back in 2009. Last year, the Green Wave finished second out of four teams with a score of 837.5, finishing behind Rice and rolling over North Texas as well as host Houston.
This year, the field looks a little different for the visiting Green Wave, who will face off against nine other teams: UC Davis, Colorado State, Idaho, New Mexico State, North Texas, Northern Colorado, Oregon State, Rice and Houston. In addition, the meet will take place inside the venue that will also host the American Conference Championships in February.
The three-day event will begin each morning at 10 a.m. for preliminary sessions. Finals will take place starting at 6 p.m. each night.
The Tulane divers will travel to the Georgia Tech Invitational at the McAuley Aquatic Center in Atlanta for a diving-only meet. This facility will also serve as the natatorium for NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships in March. The Green Wave have already qualified three divers for NCAA Zones. Competition at Georgia Tech begins at 9 a.m. each morning with finals following at 5 p.m.
The Green Wave are well rested after having last weekend off following their dual meet with SMU on Oct. 24. Tulane fared well against the Mustangs, but were edged out by the defending conference champions, 153-146, on the last event of the day.
Freshman Natalie Clausen continued to impress in just her second collegiate appearance, taking first by a large margin in both the 500 (4:59.85) and 1000 (10:19.80) free. Freshman Shelly Zelnick also came out strong with a pair of first-place finishes in the 100 back (57.03) and 200 IM (2:06.55). Senior Holly Grender took home two second-place finishes in the 200 back (2:04.95) and the 200 IM (2:08.78).
Tulane also made a strong showing from the diving board, sweeping the top two spots in both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives on dominating performances from freshman Caroline McCleary (263.92, 268.13) and senior Lauren Arnold (246.91, 250.50).
