LEXINGTON, Ky. - Facing a top-25 ranked SEC opponent for the second time in three days, the Tulane women's tennis team (7-2) fell 7-0 to No. 21 Kentucky on Sunday. It marked the first time this season the Green Wave were shutout by an opponent.
"Playing two top-25 SEC schools indoors on the road can be tough conditions but this team rose to the challenge and showed me they can battle with anyone," Sisk continued. "If this level of fight and determination continues, and I know it will, their future will continue to be riddled with victories. Make no mistake, my team knows I'm proud of them and I challenged them to continue to get better, believe in what we are about, and keep working the process."
For the second straight contest, the Green Wave faced a 1-0 deficit heading into singles play. Kelsey Dieters and Mami Adachi delivered the first blow for the Wildcats via a 6-2 win over Nicky Stracar and Vanessa Nommensen at No. 2 doubles. Then, Karagoz and Sade Atkinson, who had another crack at No. 1 doubles this weekend, fell 6-3 to the 56th ranked Nadia Ravita and Aldila Sutjiadi.
Kentucky then carried their momentum into singles, earning straight set victories over Nommensen at No. 4, Ipek Birol at No. 2, and Stracar at No. 1. Both Nommensen and Stracar faced ranked opponents for the second straight match, respectively falling to No. 108 Mami Adachi 6-1, 6-0, and No. 85 Ravita, 6-4, 6-1.
Meredith Maltby's team high six match win streak came to an end on Sunday, falling 6-2, 6-3 to Taylor Lederman in the No. 6 position.
Next, both Karagoz and Jacqui Katz fought on to super tiebreak third sets, but just couldn't close out to get the Green Wave on the board. Karagoz was up 6-3, 3-0, but eventually dropped a tough 7-6(4) decision in the second set before losing 10-6 in the third. Meanwhile, Katz rallied down 2-1 in the first set to take it 6-4, before dropping 6-2 in the second and 10-6 in the third as well.
Up next, the Green Wave return home to the City Park Pepsi Tennis Center to host in-state foe No. 37 LSU on Wednesday, Feb. 18, at 2 p.m. CT.
