Women's Tennis Sweeps Second Straight Double Header
Feb 9, 2015 | Women's Tennis
NEW ORLEANS - For the first time under Tulane women's tennis head coach Terri Sisk, the Green Wave have seized a 7-0 record. With their second straight doubleheader sweep on Sunday, the Olive and Blue shutout both McNeese State, 4-0, and Southern Miss, 4-0.
"Another long day with two tough tasks presenting themselves in the form of quality opponents," Tulane head coach Terri Sisk said. "Overall I'm happy with the way we executed when tired, mentally and physically. Doubleheaders can be tough so I'm happy with our results."
Vanessa Nommensen and Jacqui Katz led the way for the Olive and Blue, picking up two singles wins in both matches. Nommensen defeated McNeese State's Vivien Borbely 6-3, 6-1, before picking up the 6-2, 6-2 victory over Claudia Castella of Southern Miss.
Jacqui Katz then followed suit in dominant fashion, surrendering just one game vs her McNeese State opponent Anastasia Trubich and then picking up another straight set win (6-3, 6-2) vs Alex Kitchen of Southern Miss.
Sade Atkinson and Ipek Birol then respectively helped clinch and round out the singles wins. Atkinson earned a 6-4, 6-0 win vs Andrea Nenu of McNeese State while Birol downed Lisa Schneider 6-1, 7-5 of Southern Miss.
Tulane also started each contest by claiming the doubles point. The team of Birol and Katz produced a 2-0 day as the tandem earned a 6-0 win over Nenu/Borbely of McNeese and a 6-1 win over Roca/Gurgenyan of Southern Miss.
"I thought our energy was decent in doubles, sometimes a little up and down but that is definitely improving. I just can't reiterate enough how this team fights. It's just a lot of fun to watch when they refuse to lose," Sisk added.
Up next, the Wave hit the road to take on Ole Miss on Feb. 13, followed by Kentucky on Feb. 15.
