TAMPA - In an early preview of a potential American Conference Tournament matchup, the 63rd-ranked Tulane men's tennis team (12-5, 0-2) took on No. 20 South Florida (11-4, 2-0) on Saturday afternoon in the semis of the USF Spring Break Tournament. However, it was the Bulls who got the upper hand with a 4-0 victory.
"USF really took it to us today," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. "They played a good doubles point and came out strong in singles and never really looked back."
USF got on the board by taking the doubles point via wins on courts three and two. Yet, Dominik Koepfer and Chi-Shan Jao were a major highlight for Tulane today, cruising to a 6-3 victory on court one over Oliver Pramming and Justin Roberts.
The Bulls carried their momentum into singles with straight-set wins on courts three, two and four, in said order.
Court one featured two top-25 ranked singles players in No. 13 Koepfer and No. 21 Roberto Cid. USF's top-ranked competitor took the first set 6-2 and was up 5-3 in the second set when it went unfinished.
Another tight unfinished match was found on court six today between Ian Van Cott and USF's Vadym Kalyuzhnyy. Despite Kalyuzhnyy's 7-5 first set win, Van Cott battled back in the second and tied it at 4-all when the match was stopped.
"Our guys competed well throughout the day but didn't execute consistently at the level we needed to beat this team," Booras added.
The Olive and Blue will conclude tournament action tomorrow when they clash with No. 48 Penn State in another opportunity to take down a ranked foe. The Nittany Lions lost 4-3 to UNCW earlier today.
"We have another great opportunity tomorrow to bounce back from this loss and show the character of our team," Booras stated.
