Coach Momic's Quotes Following Saturday's Loss At Lamar
Sep 19, 2015 | Women's Volleyball
On the role not having his top two middle blockers had in the loss
"It was a factor at some points, but it was not the reason we lost. We lost part of our offense and the team was perhaps not as steady mentally at times. We have to get used to things like this happening. I think we still could have beaten this team. We just made too many unforced errors. But during the tournament as a whole, we showed good improvement and some fighting spirit. In that second match [against UT Rio Grande Valley] against a really tough team, they showed tremendous character and that is something we can build on as we go into conference."
On where the team goes from here
"There's still more work to be done and more improvement to be made. We're not going to say that this loss is understandable without our two middles. I think we could have done a better job in the third match, but to get two wins over the weekend is important."
On Annie Shurtz stepping in at one of the middle blocker positions despite being an outside hitter by nature
"She surprised us a little bit. We're still looking for ways to get Annie on the court. We're also looking for ways to make the team deeper and have quality subs off the bench for each position. Annie deserved the chance to play and we'll consider her in the future to play some different positions."
On if he feels the team is ready for the start of American Athletic Conference play
"I think we were able to get out of this tournament what we wanted. We got more experience to see how tough we are. We came away with a pair of wins, which is important compared to last year when we had a tough time playing our best after points 20 or 21. Another step after that is just to have depth off the bench and knowing that we have all the pieces to the puzzle now. We just have to execute and improve on some things in practice. There are some things missing with all the good things that we're doing."
