ORLANDO, FLA. - The Tulane women's tennis team wrapped its first fall tournament of the 2015-16 season on Sunday afternoon in Orlando. The UCF Quad Tournament saw the Green Wave clash against one of three other competing schools in doubles, then clash with another one of the three immediately afterwards in singles.
On Sunday, the Wave won four of its six singles matches vs. UCF and won another two against opposition from Mercer. Tulane's Sofia Kurtz, Elena Muller, Jacqui Katz, and Sade Atkinson all secured a perfect 3-0 weekend in singles, as each of the latter three recorded straight-set victories over the Knights this afternoon. Furthermore, joining the trio in the singles win column were Ipek Birol and Kyla Klier, who each finished the trip with 2-1 records.
In doubles, the Olive and Blue seized the day once more, taking two of the three matches vs. North Florida. The team of Sofia Kurtz and Naz Karagoz knocked off UNF's Mariella Calderon and Luise Intert. In addition, Muller and Katz teamed together to defeat Michelle Valdez and Hannah Fluhrer.
Thus, over the three-day weekend, all three of Tulane's doubles teams of Birol/Atkinson, Kurtz/Karagoz and Muller/Katz went 2-1. Finally, in singles, the Wave totaled a combined 17-6 mark.
"Incredible weekend for us going 3-0 in a solid hidden dual tournament," Tulane head coach Terri Sisk said. "I honestly didn't expect this level of grit from my young team but they stepped up against seasoned teams. I'm really quite proud of the team for many reasons, but the one that stuck out the most was the level of discipline we exhibited when the nerves were flying high while under pressure. With such a strong performance in our very first tournament of the year, they have truly set the bar high for the season ahead."
Up next, the Green Wave will head out west to Tucson, to compete in the three-day Arizona Tournament starting on Oct. 2.
