Cross Country Seals Record-Setting Performance at Stanford Invitational
Oct 1, 2016 | Cross Country
STANFORD, Calif. – The Green Wave cross country teams made a strong impression at the Stanford Invitational in California this morning, with the men knocking off no. 11 national seed and host team Stanford and the women taking home a seventh-place finish at the Stanford Golf Course. On the day, Tulane landed three times in the school record book on seven lifetime bests, including the fastest 8K time in school history recorded by sophomore Emmanuel Rotich.
"This was a good meet for us today, and I believe both teams benefited from the experience," director of track and field and cross country Eric Peterson said. "We expected to finish in the middle of the field, so I'll take a seventh- and eighth-place showing."
Rotich led the Tulane men to an eighth-place team finish on the day, taking home his fourth consecutive top-two finish of the year in a record-breaking 23:19.90, just two seconds behind the top finisher. Junior Moses Aloiloi, who finished 13th overall, also landed his name in the record book at the no. 3 spot with his time of 23:51.70.
"I'm impressed with Emmanuel's continued consistency this season," Peterson said. "He is very fit and gaining valuable experience with each new race. Moses and Joshua were very good today as well."
Juniors Emma Newton and Lauren Bartels led the efforts for the Tulane women, contributing to a seventh-place team finish. Newton's team-leading effort earned her a no. 8 spot on Tulane's all-time list in the 6K on her time of 21:22.50. In addition, freshmen Sarah Cella and Aislinn Roberts as well as redshirt freshman Mckenzie Melius set personal best times in the event.
"We're doing a better job competing as a team, and it's starting to have a positive impact on everyone's individual results," associate head cross country coach Michael Nussa said. "We still have work to do at our fifth spot to get where we're capable of being, but we are getting closer each week. Emma did a great job leading us again today, running better over the second half of the race than she ever has before."
The Green Wave have next weekend off before traveling to Indiana to wrap up the regular season at the ISU Pre-National Invitational in Terre Haute.
