NEW ORLEANS - Tulane football returns to Yulman Stadium for the first time in three weeks when the Green Wave host the Memphis Tigers under the Friday night lights. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. CT and will air live on ESPNU and WatchESPN online.Â
Storylines:
• After an unexpected bye week due to Hurricane Matthew, Tulane (3-2, 0-1 American Athletic Conference | West) returns to the gridiron with a critical matchup at home against Memphis (4-1, 1-0 American Athletic Conference | West) under the Friday night lights in front of a national television audience.
• The Green Wave enter with momentum on their side, riding a two-game winning streak and looking to make it three straight for the first time since winning four in a row (UL Monroe, North Texas, East Carolina and Tulsa) in 2013.
• Tulane is seeking its third conference win at home since joining The American and making Yulman Stadium its home field. The other two victories were against UConn (12-3 on Oct. 11, 2014) and UCF (45-31 on Oct. 3, 2015).
• The last time Tulane boasted a winning record in conference play was during the 2013 season with a 5-3 mark in the school's final season in Conference USA.
• Defense has been the calling card for this Green Wave squad, leading The American and ranking fourth in the nation in turnover margin at 1.6 per game and 12 total turnovers (seven fumble recoveries and five interceptions).
• Tulane is ranked 13th in the nation in total defense (309.3 yards per game) and 10th in total offensive yards allowed (1,545 yards).
• On the offensive side of the ball, Tulane has passed for more than 150 yards in each of its last two games - 181 vs. UL Lafayette and 168 at UMass and - five passing touchdowns.
• The Olive and Blue are also among the top teams in terms of time of possession at 33:16, good for second in The American and 21st in the nation.
• The Wave's triple-option ground attack continues to gain steam with 1,233 yards. The 12 rushing touchdowns are shared between junior Dontrell Hilliard (5) and redshirt seniors Josh Rounds (4) and Lazedrick Thompson (3). Twice the season already, all three have scored a touchdown in the same game (Southern and UMass).
Series Notes:
• Friday's game marks the 33rd meeting between Tulane and Memphis and the second time the two teams will meetat Yulman Stadium. The Tigers lead the all-time series 20-11-1.
• Memphis comes into the matchup with a nine-game winning streak in the series. The Green Wave's last win in the series was a 37-14 victory in New Orleans on Nov. 18, 2000.
• Tulane holds a slight edge in the series in games played at home with 9-8-1 record.
Scouting the Tigers:
• Memphis (4-1, 1-0 The American | West) is coming off a 34-27 win over Temple on Oct. 6.
• The Tigers scored in all three phases and put up 24 unanswered points in the second half to get past the Owls. Memphis was outgained on offense, 531 yards for Temple vs. 323 yards for the Tigers, in the win.
• Senior placekicker Jake Elliott became the school's scoring leader in the game. With 371 career points, Elliott moved past DeAngelo Williams (362 points) and Stephen Gostkowski (369).
Tulane vs The American:
• Friday's game vs. Memphis marks the school's 18th game in football as a member of the American Athletic Conference. The Green Wave hold a 3-14 record for their first two-plus seasons in the conference.
• Tulane's last victory over a conference opponent was a 45-31 win over UCF on Oct. 3, 2015.
