Men’s Tennis Sends Jao, Schmitz and Rey into Round of 16

AUBURN, Ala. – Three members of the Tulane men's tennis team remain alive in the main singles draw at the ITA Southern Regional in Auburn after Saturday's slate of competition. The Green Wave's upperclassmen trio of Chi-Shan Jao, Sebastian Rey and No. 66 Constantin Schmitz each went 2-0 on the day to book their respective tickets into the Round of 16.

Jao advanced via a 6-3, 4-6. 6-3 win over Alabama's Alexey Nesterov. After a tough first set, Rey soared to the Sweet 16 with a 7-6, 6-0 win over Olle Threstrup of Auburn on his home courts. In addition, No. 66 Schmitz continued to roll with a 6-4, 6-1, victory over Ole Miss' Fabian Fallert.

In other action, freshman Tim Ruetzel gave No. 26 Mate Cutura of Mississippi State all he could handle and more in a three-set battle. Ruetzel claimed the first set in a tiebreak, 7-6, but Cutura rallied in the remaining two sets, 6-3, 6-4.

Lastly, in consolation, freshman Luis Erlenbusch rattled off two straight wins over foes from Auburn and Nicholls to advance to the Round of 16.
