AUBURN, Ala. – Tulane men's tennis junior Constantin Schmitz won five straight matches over the weekend, including a ranked win over No. 34 Mazen Osama of Alabama, to reach the ITA Southern Regional final. However, No. 43 Nuno Borges of Mississippi State got the best of Schmitz on Monday morning, prevailing in three sets, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3. Schmitz's runner-up finish was the best Green Wave showing at ITA Regionals since Dimitry Koch's runner-up finish in October of 2003.
"Great job by Constantin and the rest of the guys over the weekend for another great regional tournament," Tulane head coach Mark Booras stated. "Constantin had a really great fight in this match, down 5-2 in the second set before coming back to win the set 7-5. That really shows how gutsy his performance was."
After dropping the first set 6-4, Schmitz stared at defeat in the second set, down 5-2 and facing match point. The Germany native then rallied by winning five straight games to claim the second set 7-5. Borges then retaliated in the third set when tied at two games-apiece, breaking Schmitz to jump ahead 4-2 before clinching at 6-3.
"I was really proud on how everyone stepped up, especially after losing such a great senior class last spring," Booras added. "Sebastian Rey had a really great tournament as well. He unfortunately had a heartbreaker yesterday in the quarters, falling to No. 34 Osama in two tiebreakers. Jao did great, reaching the Round of 16, so it's nice to see that kind of performance coming out of our upperclassmen.
Our underclassmen and new guys did well too. Tyler Schick had a nice run and Tim Ruetzel had a good win and almost pulled an upset over No. 26 Mate Cutura of Mississippi State."
