Oct 2, 2016 | Men's Tennis
HOUSTON – The Tulane men's tennis underclassmen certainly left their mark at the Rice Fall Invite this past weekend, posting a combined 18-6 mark in singles play. In fact, in both Singles Draws A and B, it was an all Green Wave final. In Draw A, sophomore Tyler Schick bested freshman Luis Erlenbusch 6-3, 6-1, while in Draw B, Tim Ruetzel defeated Jonathan Star, 6-3, 6-3.
"This was another great weekend for our team," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. "The guys really pieced everything toghether nicely and dominated all the draws. Again we saw some great play out of our returners as well as our newcomers, which gives us a lot of confidence moving forward seeing the depth that we have."
Schick and Erlenbusch each won three singles matches to advance to the Draw A final on Sunday, before experience topped youth with Schick's straight-set victory, moving his overall record to 5-1. In addition, the two also teamed together in Doubles Draw A, where they collected two straight wins before falling in the final, 8-4, to UIW's Mortier/Bendana.
Next, Ruetzel joins Schick with a 5-1 overall mark this fall after his 3-0 weekend as well, besting Star in the Green Wave all-freshman showdown in Singles Draw B.
In Singles Draw C, sophomore Eric Wagner recorded a 3-1 weekend, thus improving his 2016 fall record to 5-2.
