NEW ORLEANS - Tulane football (3-6, 0-5 American Athletic Conference | West) looks to get back into the win column in its second straight road matchup this weekend when they head to Houston (7-2, 4-2 The American | West) for week 11 action. Kickoff is slated for 2:30 p.m. CT on the CBS SportsNetwork.
Storylines:
• Three of Tulane's six losses have been by seven points of less with the Wave being in four of those games in the fourth quarter.
• The Wave's last road victory was a 34-31 triumph at Army on Nov. 14, 2015 and last road win in a conference game was a 31-24 win at Houston on Nov. 8, 2014.
• Head coach Willie Fritz is looking for his first conference win at Tulane. He was 14-2 in conference play in the Sun Belt with Georgia Southern.
• Fritz is just four wins away from reaching 200 for his coaching career. Of his 196 wins, 60 have come on the NCAA Division I level (FBS and FCS) and 157 of his wins have come at NCAA institutions.
• The defense remains the calling card for the Green Wave through nine games. In addition to being tied for second in the nation in fumble recoveries with 12, Tulane enters the week ranked tied for 16th in the nation in turnover margin (+7, 0.78 per game).
• The Green Wave's defense is ranked third in The American and 27th in the nation in total defense (360.7 yards per game).
• The foursome of redshirt junior cornerback Parry Nickerson, senior nickelback Richard Allen, redshirt junior defensive end Ade Aruna and redshirt sophomore defensive end Peter Woullard are tied for 11th in the nation in fumble recoveries with two each.
• Offensively, the Green Wave's tripleoption ground attack, ranked 15th in the nation at 251.6 yards per game, features the running back foursome of junior Dontrell Hilliard (724 yards, 9 TDs) and redshirt seniors Josh Rounds (572 yards, 5 TDs), Lazedrick Thompson (356 yards, 4 TDs) and redshirt
Series Notes:
• Saturday's game marks the 21st meeting between Tulane and Houston with the Cougars leading the series 15-5. Tulane is 3-7 in games in this series played in Houston with the last win coming on the 31-24 win on Nov. 8, 2014.
• The Cougars have won 11 of the last 12 games in the series.
Scouting the Cougars:
• Houston (7-2, 4-2 The American | West) is coming off a 31-24 win at UCF on Oct. 29.
• Senior quarterback Greg Ward, Jr. ran for two touchdowns and passed for another in the second half as Houston rallied from a 21-point third-quarter deficit to beat UCF. Ward is 25-4 as the Cougars' starting quarterback. He continues to hold the school's career record with a .862 winning percentage and is the only starting quarterback in school history with a perfect season after going 13-0 in 2015.
• Houston has posted a 16-3 all-time record in games played at TDECU Stadium. The Cougars have won their last 13 games at TDECU Stadium. Houston has not lost at home since that 2014 loss to Tulane. Head coach Tom Herman is 12-0 in games played at TDECU Stadium.
