Houston -- Tulane swimming and diving had another outstanding day at the American Athletic Conference Championships as the Green Wave took hold of second place in the team rankings at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center in Houston.
With a score of 440.50, Tulane now trails SMU by less than 20 points going into day four of competition. On the day, Green Wave swimmers broke four new school records and notched over a dozen lifetime-best times. When all was said and done, Tulane swimmers took home three total medals.
"I am utterly amazed at the momentum that this team has gained in the last 24 hours," head coach Katie Robinson said. "This team was absolutely the best team in the conference today. I'm proud of all the school records that we set today and the tenacity that those women had to take those records down. To get on the medal stand so many times in one day, that only happened one time last year. They've worked hard, and they are reaping the benefits of their hard work. I couldn't be more proud of these women and I look forward to tomorrow."
In the morning, the Green Wave had seventeen swimmers qualify for finals competition. Junior Ellie Sills set the first school record of the day with her time of 54.66 that landed her a No. 4 seed in finals action. In prelims for the 200 free, sophomore Emma Lincoln also notched a No. 4 seed for finals and set her own record on a time of 1:48.97.
Closing out the morning in the 100 back, freshman Paris Zhang set a personal best and notched a No. 2 time in the record book with her second-place finish (54.84).
In finals competition, senior Roni Meyer kicked off the evening taking a silver medal in the 400 IM. With her time of 4:19.90, Meyer shattered her personal best by over five seconds and notched the first school record of the night.
Sophomore Kaitlin Simpson would follow suit in the 100 fly, snagging a sliver of her own and scratching her name at the top of the record book with her swim of 54.10, taking down the record set by Sills earlier in the day. Just three places behind in fifth, Sills beat the personal best she had cleared that morning (54.34) for a second-place spot on Tulane's all-time list.
The records kept rolling in the 200 free when Lincoln took home the bronze in just 1:48.03, beating her record-breaking time set earlier in the day. In the 100 breast, senior Mia Schachter also got to step up to the podium with a second place finish on her time of 1:01.52.
Tulane closed out the night with a final record-breaking, third-place finish in the 400 medley relay. The team of Elizabeth Cook, Schachter, Simpson and Lincoln took two seconds off the previous top time set at last year's conference championships and swam the race in just 3:40.10.
