WTN Falls Short in Upset Bid to No. 24 Kansas
Mar 12, 2016 | Women's Tennis
HOUSTON - Squaring off with their third opponent ranked inside the nation's Top-25 in the past five matches, the Tulane women's tennis team (4-10) fell short in their upset bid against No. 24 Kansas on Saturday morning. Senior Jacqui Katz recorded the Green Wave's lone point with a 7-5, 6-2, win over Summer Collins on court five, earning her fifth dual victory on the season.
"Incredibly happy with our effort today after letting the doubles point slip away," Tulane women's tennis head coach Terri Sisk stated. "Ipek was a set up and Kyla had just split sets so it would have been a tight one had it not stopped. We have played a tough schedule this year but grown so much. This was yet another top-25 team that we went nose to nose with so our progression is definitely happening and that's what I'm looking for every match."
Tulane came close to claiming the doubles point, falling 7-6(6) in a tiebreak on court one while court two was tied at five-all.
In other notable singles action, senior Ipek Birol toughed out a 7-6(6) tiebreak win in the first set vs No. 65 Anastasiya Rychagova on court one before her match went unfinished down 3-1 in the second. In addition, junior Kyla Klier rallied after dropping the first set 6-1 with a 6-4 second set win. Her match was stopped as well.
Up next, the Green Wave return home to City Park where they'll host Akron on Saturday, March 19, at 10 a.m. CT.
