HAMMOND, La. – Despite a solid outing from rookie southpaw Ross Massey, No. 27 Tulane baseball fell 13-4 at Southeastern Louisiana at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field on Wednesday night.
With the score knotted at one in the bottom of the fifth, Tulane (4-4) allowed two runs on just one hit, as the Green Wave infield committed three errors in the frame. Despite only trailing 3-1 at that point, Southeastern Louisiana (5-3) distanced themselves in the bottom of the next inning when they scored eight runs on seven hits off three Tulane relievers.
Tulane had a short-lived rally in the top of the seventh, as they scored two runs on RBI-hits by senior outfielder Richard Carthon and junior shortstop Stephen Alemais, but both runners were left stranded as Lion's reliever Josh Green picked up a strikeout to end the threat.
Massey (1-1) got the start on the mound for the Green Wave, and the native of Baton Rouge performed well in his first-career start, fanning seven and allowing just four hits and two walks across 5.0 innings.
Tim Yandel, Patrick Duester, Eric Steel and J.P. France all pitched out of the bullpen, as did redshirt-freshman Brandon Issa, who made his collegiate debut. Issa struck out one in 1.0 inning of work.
Lions' starter Pat Cashman picked up the victory after striking out eight in 6.2 innings. The Lions' threw three other pitchers in the contest. Cashman (2-0) surrendered five hits.
The Green Wave were only outhit 12-11 by the Lions, with freshman Grant Witherspoon pacing the squad with a career-high three base knocks. Carthon, Alemais and junior outfielder Lex Kaplan collected two hits each with one of Carthon's going in the books as a triple. Alemais led the team with two RBI on the evening.
Tulane will return to the friendly confines of Greer Field at Turchin Stadium for the weekend as they will host Pepperdine in a three-game series. Game one will be Friday, March 4 at 6:30 p.m. CT, while Saturday's contest will begin at 4:00 p.m. CT and the series finale will be on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. CT.
