NEW ORLEANS - The No. 35 Tulane men's tennis team (9-3) dispatched its first top-25 ranked opponent of the season on Sunday, shutting out No. 23 Memphis (7-5), 7-0, at home at the City Park Pepsi Tennis Center. The victory wrapped a season long six-match home-stand for the Green Wave, in which they went 5-1 with three wins over top-35 opponents.
"The match went great today," Tulane men's tennis head coach Mark Booras stated. "It was a nail biter right from the start with that doubles point coming down to a tiebreaker on the last match there at number one. Both teams put it on the line at all positions, and we expected nothing less from a team as tough as Memphis."
The Olive and Blue improved to 11-1 in doubles play thanks to a 6-2 win on court three from Alex and Ian Van Cott and a 7-6 tiebreak victory on court one from No. 27 Dominik Koepfer and Chi-Shan Jao. In singles, the Wave set the tone early, claiming five of the six first sets, before cruising to the 7-0 sweep. No. 1 Koepfer remained unblemished in singles, now at 9-0, while Constantin Schmitz picked up his second straight win over a ranked opponent, improving to 9-2.
"To have a top 25 ranked team come in, we know they're going to put everything on the line," Booras explained. "I was happy with how our guys stepped up to the challenge. In singles we got a nice start which helped set the tone of things. Memphis turned it around, came right back on us at pretty much every position, but we dealt with the adversity well and came out with a victory."
Up next, the Green Wave head west to compete in the San Diego Invitational from March 17-19. Then, the Wave will continue their road trip with Santa Clara on March 22 and Fresno State on March 24.
