MEMPHIS - The fourth-seeded Tulane men's tennis team (15-7) got back to their old winning ways in Friday's American Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinal matchup against fifth-seeded Memphis (14-10), shutting out the Tigers, 4-0, for the second time this season. As a result, the Green Wave advanced to Saturday's semifinal round where they'll look to upset No. 1 seed USF at 9 a.m. CT.
"What a great win from our guys today and what a great Memphis team," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. "We stepped up from under the pressure and took it to them. In singles, we got off to a couple of quick starts then Memphis began to punch back, but we absorbed those punches and stepped up our game and punched back."
Tulane seized the early momentum by capturing the doubles point with back-to-back 6-4 victories from No. 22 Dominik Koepfer/Chi-Shan Jao on court one and Sebastian Rey/Ian Van Cott on court three. Koepfer then continued to roll in singles, improving to 18-1 this spring with a 6-4, 6-4, victory over No. 81 Ryan Peniston. A few minutes later, Rey followed suit with a 6-4, 6-4, win of his own over Kai Lemke on court three to pull Tulane within striking distance of victory.
Next, Ian Van Cott, who was replacing his injured brother Alex in the lineup at No. 5 singles, played the role of clincher, earning a 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 win vs. Felix Rauch.
