
Swimming & Diving to Hold Intrasquad Scrimmage

NEW ORLEANS --Â The Tulane swimming & diving program will hold an intrasquad scrimmage Friday, Sept. 23 at the Reily Center Natatorium, before beginning its 2016-17 season at Rice on Oct. 14 and 15 at the Dual-A-Pa-Looza event. The scrimmage is open to the public and will begin at 2:30 p.m. Fans can pick up a free Ready to Roll t-shirt at the door.
The Green Wave's 2016 season concluded with a second-place finish, the program's best finish since 2005, at the American Athletic Conference Championships in Houston. Green Wave swimmers broke school records on 18 occasions, earned nine individual medals and set more than 60 personal bests in the four-day event.Â
This season, Tulane returns five of its 10 swimmers who earned spots on the 2016 AAC Swimming and Diving All-Conference Teams, including junior Emma Lincoln, Kaitlin Simpson and sophomores Shelly Zelnick, Paris Zhang and Natalie Clausen.Â
Clausen medaled twice at the 2016 AAC Championships, winning gold in the 1650 free, where she set a meet record and broke the school record with a time of 16:30.28, and a silver in the 500 free, where she notched a top time in the record book of 4:50.00. Lincoln finished third in the 200 free with a time of 1:48.03, both a personal best and school record. Simpson notched a second-place finish in the 100 fly with a personal best and school record-breaking performance of 54.10.
Zhang, Simpson and Lincoln were part of the 400 free relay team, which swam to a school record-breaking performance of 3:20.05 to nab a third-place finish at the AAC Championships. Zelnick earned third place in the 200 IM at the AAC Championships with a time of 2:02.87, and her 1:59.07 finish in the 200 back set a personal best and school record.
Other returnees include senior Ellie Sills, who holds the school record in the 200 fly, and sophomore Caroline McCleary, who notched the third best 3-meter diving score and fourth best 1-meter diving score in program history last season. Freshman newcomer Olivia Johnson, who participated in the 400 IM at the US Olympic Swim Team Trails in Omaha, Nebraska this summer, joins Tulane's program this season, as well as six other incoming freshman competitors.Â
