NEW ORLEANS – Tulane bowling opens the 2017-18 season this weekend, hosting the fifth annual Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Bowling Invitational Friday through Sunday at AMF All Star Lanes in Kenner, La.
Â
The Green Wave, ranked No. 17 in the preseason National Tenpin Coaches Association poll, begin their seventh season of competition on Friday. Â
Matches begin at 9:55 a.m. Friday and 8:55 a.m. Saturday morning, running through the late afternoon both days. Bracket play on Sunday begins at 8:30 a.m. until approximately 12:30 p.m., with an awards ceremony to follow shortly thereafter. The full tournament schedule is located on the tournament central page.
Â
The Green Wave are looking to repeat as champions of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Bowling Invitational. Tulane's matches will be streamed live via Facebook Live.
Â
"It's always nice to kick off the season with our home tournament, and this year, we have an additional job to defend our title," head coach Hayley Veitch said. "There is definitely a lot of excitement among the team to get the season started. The players have progressed over the past couple of months, so they are prepared. I am very confident that they will do well and enjoy the experience of our home tournament again. Win or lose, I know they will give everything they have."
Â
The tournament field, which is comprised of 15 schools, includes seven ranked programs. Joining Tulane in the field are No. 5 Sam Houston State, No. 6 Stephen F. Austin, No. 19 UAB, No. 20 Prairie View A&M, No. 25 Duquesne. Alabama A&M, Florida A&M, Jackson State, Lincoln Memorial, Louisiana Tech, Southern, Texas Southern and Valparaiso round out the field.
Â
"We are excited about having the biggest field in this tournament's history, with local teams as well as teams from afar," Veitch said. "We would like to welcome Lincoln Memorial and Duquesne who will be attending the tournament for the first time. We also would like to say thank you to Allstate Sugar Bowl for sponsoring our tournament and allowing us to host a first-class event."
Â
The Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Bowling Invitational is a three-day tournament with matches on Friday and Saturday to determine seeding for the three-round bracket play on Sunday. The entire tournament will be scratch and based on match wins and losses. Teams compete in six, five-game Baker matches on Friday followed by six traditional matches on Saturday. The teams will then be seeded based on total pins for the bracket round on Sunday, which will be three Baker best 4-out-of-7 matches. The final team positions will be determined after the bracket round.
Â
Last year, the Green Wave defeated Stephen F. Austin in the bracket play finals, topping the Ladyjacks, 4-1, in the Baker matches. Tulane posted an 11-2 record, 14,312 total pins and a tournament-best 207.4 pin average. Senior Michelle Ng led the Wave with a second-place individual finish and a 225.50 pin average, earning All-Tournament Team honors.
