KENNER, La. – No. 17 Tulane bowling put on a show to start the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Bowling Invitational Friday morning, setting a school record with a 287 in their first Baker game, and rounded out the opening match with a program-best Baker score of 1,241.
The Green Wave went on to win each of their first four matches on the day, opening the tournament with a total of 5,244 pins and a 209.8 average to post a 4-1 record. Tulane sits second in the team standings after the first day of competition, trailing No. 6 Stephen F. Austin by just 22 pins.
"Obviously shooting 1,241 out the blocks was a very great achievement," Tulane head coach Hayley Veitch said. "We've nailed the start, and we're pretty confident about that, but we need to work on the breakdown. We're in a good position. Tomorrow we play traditional games, and it's a whole new day so anything can happen. I'm confident that we have bowlers on our team that will excel."
Tulane defeated Alabama A&M, 1,241-774, No. 20 Prairie View A&M, 1,119-1,082, Louisiana Tech, 1,066-917, and Valparaiso, 938-890. The Green Wave only stumbled in the final match of the day against Stephen F. Austin, 976-880.
In the first match, the Olive and Blue followed an opening-frame spare with 10 consecutive strikes, before a seven concluded the 10th frame. In the final game of that five-game match, the Wave bowled nine straight strikes to open the game, before posting a nine, spare, nine in the 10th frame.
Stephen F. Austin leads the team standings after the first day, with 5,266 total pins, while No 5 Sam Houston State sits third with 5,152 pins, Lincoln Memorial is fourth with 5,038 pins, and Valparaiso is in fifth place with 5,007 total pins.
The Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Bowling Invitational continues Saturday with traditional matches beginning at 8:30 a.m. at AMF All Star Lanes. Teams will play five traditional matches Saturday, and total team pinfall from the first two days will determine seeding for bracket play on Sunday.
