NEW ORLEANS -- Junior Emmanuel Rotich's historic season rolls on this weekend when he competes at the NCAA Division I Cross Country National Championships, Saturday morning at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky. Rotich is set to run in the men's 10k race, which begins at 10:45 a.m.
"I think his confidence level is high and that he can certainly go out and do it," director of track & field and cross country Eric Peterson said. "He has the opportunity to challenge himself again at the championships, and I think he has every right to believe that he can be an All-American and a top-15 runner in the nation. He has worked very hard to get there."
Rotich's trip to the NCAA National Championships is the culmination of what has been a spectacular season of running. Last weekend, Rotich punched his ticket to the championship by winning the South Central Regional Championships, where he repeated as champion by claiming first place in men's 10k with a time of 29:49.1. Rotich maintained a pace of 4:47 per mile, setting a new personal best and school record in the 10k and breaking the 10k course record at Texas A&M's Watts Cross Country Course in the process.
With his win, Rotich has won five consecutive meets, including The American Championships (10/28 in Philadelphia), the Pre-National Invitational (10/14 in Louisville, Ky.), the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational, (9/29 in South Bend, Ind.) and the Temple Invitational (9/1 in Philadelphia). His performance earned him the honor of winning the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's (USTFCCCA) South Central Region Athlete of the Year award.
"I am confident, and I think that I am ready," Rotich said. "Everything is good. I am healthy, and I think that I am in the best shape of my life."
Last season, Rotich qualified for and competed at the championship, coming away with an 85th place finish (30:46.5) in the 10k race against the field of 251 collegiate runners.
