Wyatt's Double-Double Paces Women's Basketball Over South Alabama

NEW ORLEANS – Junior Harlyn Wyatt posted a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds and senior Kolby Morgan added 23 points as the Green Wave women's basketball team defeated South Alabama 65-51 in an exhibition game at Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse on Sunday night.
The contest was held as a charity event with all proceeds from ticket sales going to the American Red Cross to aid in hurricane relief efforts.
The exhibition was Tulane's final warmup of the year, and regular-season action is set to begin on Friday at Maine.
The Green Wave were ahead by 10 points early in the game, leading 19-9. But the Jaguars fought back to tie things up at 29-29 in the third quarter. From there, Tulane exploded with a 12-0 run that included 8 points from Morgan and 4 from Wyatt.
South Alabama inched within 6 points in the fourth quarter, but Tulane scored the next four points to pull away for good. Tulane never trailed in the game and led for all but 56 seconds.
Besides Morgan's 23 points and Wyatt's 17 – which would be a career high if the contest counted – Tulane got 9 points from Kaila Manuirirangi and 5 from Kaila Anderson. Manuirirangi topped the team with five assists, Wyatt led Tulane with three blocks and Morgan had three steals.
Tulane put up strong offensive numbers in the first quarter, making eight of its 13 shot attempts and scoring 19 points. Wyatt was a perfect 4 of 4 from the field in the quarter and led Tulane with 8 points, and Manuirirangi picked up three of her five assists in the quarter as the Green Wave led 19-13 after 10 minutes.
The regular season begins for the Green Wave on Friday with the team traveling to Maine to take on the host Black Bears in the first contest of a two-game tournament. Tipoff in Maine is set for 5 p.m. central.
