HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The now No. 36 Tulane women's tennis team (13-4) celebrated Fat Tuesday with a 4-3 road victory at Southern Miss. The Green Wave jumped out to a 1-0 lead after claiming the doubles point then received singles victories from Elena Muller, Ivone Alvaro and the clincher Sade Atkinson.
"Obviously I'm happy with securing the win today on the road against a very determined Southern Miss team," Tulane head coach Terri Sisk said. "I give them credit for playing with heart and really wanting to win. I am disappointed with the mentality we had coming in to this match. We started incredibly slow in doubles and that flowed into singles and almost got the best of us. We didn't seem as if we wanted to battle and that led to sloppy, undisciplined tennis, and that was tough to watch. I know this team though. They will reset and get back to being the team I know they are."
Elena Muller and Naz Karagoz continued to roll at No. 1 doubles, picking up their team leading ninth victory this spring after clinching the doubles point 7-5 vs. Drescher/Kitchen. Ivone Alvaro and Sade Atkinson also continued to gel as a doubles pairing, improving to 5-1 today after a 6-2 win on court two.
In singles, each time Southern Miss evened the score, Tulane responded with a singles victory, starting with the reigning American Athletic Conference Player of the Week Elena Muller, who wrapped up first for the Wave, 6-4, 6-2, on court five. Freshman Ivone Alvaro then picked up Tulane's third point via a 7-6(1), 6-1, win on court four.
Then, with the team score all knotted up at 3-3, Sade Atkinson came through in the clutch with a 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 clincher on court three, picking up her ninth dual win on the year.
Up next, the Green Wave remain on the road when they travel to UAB on Sunday, March 5, at Noon CT.
