Football Continues Improvement During Spring Practice
Apr 13, 2017 | Football
NEW ORLEANS – Tulane football has reached the two-thirds mark of spring practice with the completion of practice No. 10 on a warm and sunny Thursday morning at Yulman Stadium.
Head coach Willie Fritz is pleased with the progress of the team, and the offense in particular, compared to a similar time a year ago. He noted the improvement of the passing game, but acknowledged the amount of work that remains for the Green Wave to field a strong unit.
"Obviously, practice is not a game, but we're throwing and catching the ball much better, "Fritz said. "We're protecting much better, and I think they guys have a very good understanding of what we're doing. We're still a work in progress. We have a long way to go, but luckily we have a few more practices and all summer to get better. At this point, compared to last year, we're much better."
Former Tulane All-America running back Matt Forte spoke to the team prior to practice Thursday morning. Forte, a Slidell native and two-time NFL Pro Bowl selection, now a member of the New York Jets, was joined by former Tulane teammate and current NFL scout Michael Parenton.
"One of the things Matt kept talking about was consistency, and doing it every single day, over and over and over again," Fritz said. "He is a great example. The thing I thought was most impressive was he started it off with the fact that he has a degree in finance from Tulane. He's on the cusp of being one of the few backs in NFL history that has rushed for over 10,000 yards and caught for over 5,000 yards. I love having those (former players) back here. Lester Ricard and Michael Parenton were here today as well. We have a lot of guys around."
The Green Wave continues to roll through spring workouts in preparation for the 2017 season, which begins Sept. 2 at Yulman Stadium against Grambling State. Practice continues Friday morning, and the Spring Game will be held Saturday, April 22 at 10 a.m. at Yulman Stadium.
