PALM COAST, Fla. – Freshmen led the way for a youthful Tulane women's golf team as Haydyn Gibson shot one under 71 and Gabrielle Correia posted an even par 72 to open play at the 2017 American Athletic Conference Women's Golf Championship.
Gibson and Correia, along with redshirt freshman Elise Genoux, paced the Green Wave over the first 18 holes on the Conservatory Course at Hammock Beach Resort. Gibson was on fire throughout, sitting at two under par through the first nine holes. She and Genoux nearly aced the par three, 113-yard eighth hole with Gibson's approach stopping just a couple of feet away from the cup and Correia's shot sticking just a little further out. Each sank their respective birdie putt.
Gibson and Correia each dropped birdies on the 16th and 18th holes to help Tulane close at 294 (+6), two shots behind Tulsa (292, +4) in fourth place and four shots behind SMU and Houston (290, +2) tied for second place. UCF finished the day as the first-round leader at 284 (-4).
Genoux shot even par over her final 10 holes to card a 74 (+2), while sophomore Sofia Goicoechea rounded out the Green Wave's scoring with a 77 (+5).
"We did really well today," said head coach Lorne Don. "To see our three freshmen go out there and play the way they did, in the first round of their first conference tournament, was great. They stayed patient, all five of them. I think each of one of them had a couple of things they would like to do better tomorrow and that's what we're really looking for. Again, we had a really good day (and) put ourselves in a good position heading into the second round tomorrow."
Monday's second round gets underway for Tulane with tee times beginning at 7:50 a.m.
