2018 ITA KICK-OFF DRAFT
NEW ORLEANS – Early afternoon on Wednesday, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) held its annual Kick-Off Weekend Draft in prep for the 2018 season. The Tulane women's tennis squad was selected as part of the 60-team field and will be the No. 4 seed in the Auburn Regional. It marked the fourth time since the resurrection of the program that the Green Wave will participate in the ITA Kick-Off event.
The 2018 ITA Kickoff Weekend will take place the weekend of Jan. 26. It consists of 15 regional sites comprised of four teams each, seeded 1-4. The team that wins both of its matches to win the regional qualifies for the ITA National Team Indoor Championship, hosted by the University of Wisconsin, Feb. 9-12.
The Green Wave will challenge host and No. 14 nationally ranked Auburn in the opening match. The Tigers reached the Round of 16 in the NCAA Championships this past spring, wrapping the year 25-11.
The other half of the bracket consists of No. 25 Miami vs. No. 46 Santa Barbara. The winners square off for the National Team Indoor berth while the losers compete in a consolation matchup, thus guaranteeing two matches for each team.
The Olive and Blue finished the 2017 campaign 22-7. It not only marked a 14-win improvement from the year prior, but also the first 20+ win season in the post-Katrina era. Both Sade Atkinson and Ivone Alvaro were named American Athletic All-Conference selections, as the latter was also named Co-Freshman of the Year. Lastly, the Wave will return all but one player to next year's singles lineup.
