Women’s Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Earn American Athletic Conference Team Academic Excellence Awards

Outdoor program earns second academic excellence award in three years
NEW ORLEANS – On Tuesday afternoon, American Athletic Conference Commissioner Mike Aresco announced the 21 teams that have been recognized with the 2016-17 Team Academic Excellence Awards for having the highest collective grade-point averages in each conference sport. Representing the Tulane Green Wave with a double dip of awards were the women from both the indoor and outdoor track & field programs.
The accolade marked the second time in three years the women's outdoor track & field program reeled in the Team Academic Excellence Award. In addition, the Tulane women made it a clean sleep when the indoor program received the academic excellence nod as well.
The selections were made by the conference's Academic Affairs Committee in which the winners were chosen based on 2016-17 GPA's of each student-athlete who appeared on the roster as of the last contest of the championship segment in each conference-sponsored sport.
Up next, The American will announce its 2016-17 Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award winners on Wednesday, followed by their All-Academic Team on Thursday.
The women's outdoor squad sent three representatives to the NCAA Championships last month in Jessica Duckett, Dali Ortiz and Alyssa Applebee, with the latter recording a program best seventh place finish in the pole vault with a school record mark of 4.30m. Duckett's highlight came at the conference championships where she was named Co-Women's Most Outstanding Track Performer after winning gold in both the 100m hurdles and 400m hurdles.
Meanwhile, the indoor squad recorded five podium finishes and secured a program best fifth place showing at the conference championships back in February.
