MOBILE, Ala. – Tulane women's golf opens the 2017-18 season this weekend at the USA Intercollegiate at the Magnolia Golf Club in Mobile, Ala.
The Green Wave make the drive east on I-10 to open the fifth season under head coach Lorne Don in a three-day tournament that gets underway Saturday, Sept. 16 and runs through Monday, Sept. 18. Tee times for each day are scheduled for 8 a.m. The 13-team regional field includes two teams from Louisiana (Tulane and McNeese), five from Alabama (UAB, Alabama State, Samford, Troy and host South Alabama), three from Texas (Lamar, Texas-Arlington and Texas A&M Corpus Christi), one from Florida (West Florida), one from Tennessee (Lipscomb) and one from Kentucky (Western Kentucky).
"We're excited to play a tournament close to home," Don said. "I'm really happy that all eight of our players will get an opportunity to tee it up this weekend and improve on what we have been working on in the first few weeks of practice," Don said. "We've really been focusing a lot on process. One of the things we are looking forward to this weekend is sticking to that. If we can focus on attitude, commitment and positivity throughout the weekend, I think we are going to have a great tournament."
This year's Green Wave are another youthful group with no seniors and led by junior Laura Munoz. The Ibague, Colombia, native paced Tulane in stroke average (75.03) a year ago and posted the team's top individual finish (tie for 10th at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Championship). Munoz leads the Wave lineup at the USA Intercollegiate and is joined by freshman Jennifer Rosenberg at No. 2, sophomore Gabrielle Correia at No. 3, sophomore Haydyn Gibson at No. 4 and junior Sofia Goicoechea at No. 5. Sophomore Ebba Bjornberg, junior Abbie Cantwell and redshirt sophomore Elise Genoux are set to compete as individuals.
Don said his squad should have a good feel for the course come Saturday's opening round, having played a practice round on the course during the preseason and following Friday's practice round.
"They should have a good understanding of how they are going to attack the course," Don added. "There should be a lot of good birdie opportunities out there so hopefully they are ready to be aggressive and take advantage of those."
Following the USA Intercollegiate, Tulane travels Oct. 2-3 to Highland Park, Ill. for the 2017 Windy City Collegiate Classic at the Northmoor Country Club.
