NEW ORLEANS - The 22nd-ranked Tulane men's tennis team won its ninth straight season opener, 6-1, over the University of Miami (Fla.), in non-conference action Friday afternoon at the City Park Pepsi Tennis Center.
Tulane (1-0) continued to pressure Miami (0-1) with the start of singles play, claiming the first set on four of six courts. Ranked No. 107, junior Tyler Schick picked up where he left off in the fall as the first Wave player off his court, topping Niclas Genovese, 6-0, 6-3, on court five to extend the team lead to 2-0 in the overall match.
Ruetzel was next to finish, topping Tatsuki Shimamoto, 6-0, 6-1, on court six, before the 21st-ranked Schmitz collected a 6-3, 6-2 win over 78th-ranked Christian Langmo on court one to clinch the match for the Green Wave. Moore, holding a No. 112 listing in the ITA singles poll, cruised past 71st-ranked Bojan Jankulovski, 6-3, 6-2, from the No. 2 position in the lineup to increase Tulane's lead to 5-0.
Despite a setback on court three to put Miami on the scoreboard, Stewart bounced back from a lost first set on court four to take the second frame, 7-6(4), before claiming the third set tiebreaker, 10-7, to record the Wave's sixth and final team point of the match.
Tulane returns to action Jan. 28-29 when it heads to Berkley, Calif., for ITA Kickoff Weekend. The Green Wave will face 19th-ranked California on day one and will meet the winner or loser of the No.13 Stanford/Oregon matchup on day two.
