Swimming & Diving Posts Three Top-Five Finishes in Day 1 at Houston

HOUSTON – The Tulane swimming & diving team had three top-five finishes and one new addition to the school record book in the first day of the Houston Quad Meet on Friday evening.

The event – featuring Tulane, Houston, Rice and LSU – is being scored as separate dual meets and sees Tulane trailing Rice 101-79, trailing Houston 145-41 and trailing LSU 142-44 with one day of competition remaining.

Paris Zhang took second in the 100 back with a time of 55.40 seconds, coming up just .08 seconds shy of the victory. Jordan Morling came in 13th place with a collegiate-best time of 58.07, Claire Golba was 14th in the event in 58.09 seconds, Inger-Ane Schefte took 16th in 59.99 and Lilly Morgan was 21st in 59.34 seconds.

Lena Hayakawa was third in the 200 breast, touching the wall in 2:18.29. That gives her the new 11th-best overall time in program history. Hayakawa already holds the fourth-, eighth- and ninth-best overall times at Tulane and is third all-time in team history for individual times. Kate McDonald also finished in the top eight, taking seventh in 2:20.75. Senior Alex Lakota was 13th in 2:33.21, taking more than half a second off her collegiate best.

The 100 fly saw Vieira touch the wall at 56.76 seconds to finish in fifth place while Alex Brindisi was 13th in 59.10 seconds. Jeni Griffin was right behind her in 14th place with a time of 1:01.03, and Emily Ramier was 19th place with a time of 59.09.

In the 200 free, Shelly Zelnick was the top Tulane finisher with a time of 1:51.31 for sixth place. Morgan Tacik took eighth in 1:52.21, and Ellie Vincent was 15th in 2:00.15.

In the 1000 free, Olivia Johnson came in seventh in 10:15.52 while Ellie Vincent was 12th in 10:46.74.

In the fastest race of the night, Courtney Barker showed off her speed with a time of 24.21 seconds for eighth place. Morgan was 10th in 24.51 seconds, Schefte took 12th in 24.87 seconds and Griffin was 14th in 25.28 seconds.

The night started with the 400 medley relay. Tulane took ninth in that event in 3:51.87 with Claire Golba, Lena Hayakawa, Gabby Vieira and Tacik swimming the race.

The final individual event of the night was the 200 IM. That saw McDonald take ninth in 2:08.53, Johnson take 10th in 2:09.10, Morling come in 12th in 2:10.61 and Lakota finish 14th in 2:13.94.

Tulane closed the night with a sixth-place showing in the 200 free relay. The quartet of Barker, Zelnick, Zhang and Brindisi finished with a time of 1:36.67. The Green Wave's other entry of Tacik, Morgan, Hayakawa and Lincoln took seventh in 1:38.47.

On the 1-meter springboard, Katie Nicol came in sixth with a score of 202.45 points. Anise Muir was eighth with a score of 194.60.

Action in the pool concludes on Saturday with the first race set for 10 a.m.
