Tulane Athletics Hosts Student-Athlete Career Fair and Networking Event
Jan 30, 2018 | General, SAAC
NEW ORLEANS – Tulane Athletics, in partnership with the Tulane Letterwinners Association, Athlete Network and the Office of Student-Athlete Academic Services, hosted a Career Fair and Networking Event Sunday evening in the Jill H. and Avram A. Glazer Family Club for all sophomore, junior and senior student-athletes.
The event afforded Tulane student-athletes the opportunity to network with local and national employers as well as graduate schools and successful Tulane letterwinners. The night started with the Tulane Letterwinners Association Panel, composed of speakers Johnny Arthurs (A&S '69, Basketball), Al Andrews (A&S '67, L '71, Basketball), Tommy Manzella Jr. (B '05, Baseball), Jimmy Ordeneaux (TC '99, Football) and Barbara Farris (UC '98, Women's Basketball) who told the student-athletes their success stories and offered advice on their transition from being a Division I student-athlete to a working professional or graduate student.
"I thought the event was effective in giving our athletes the confidence to approach industry professionals and have meaningful conversations," football sophomore Andrew Zuckerman said. "It was helpful to start off with the group discussions. Overall, I thought the fair was a very fun, interactive program. I learned a lot about myself especially, and how to utilize my experiences and efforts as an athlete to my advantage in networking and career ventures."
Following the letterwinners panel, the evening included a speed networking event with roundtable discussions, allowing the student-athletes to have more one-on-one time with the employers and letterwinners to discuss post-graduation opportunities. After the panel was a career fair with over 20 employers present, including the New Orleans Baby Cakes, Total Quality Logistics, Ballengee Group, Teach for America, the Drug Enforcement Administration, Northwestern Mutual and MassMutual, as well as representatives from the A.B. Freeman School of Business Graduate Program and Northumbria University (England).
"The Career Fair was just the beginning of our comprehensive programming, through the Devlin S-AFE Center for Leadership Development, to prepare our student-athletes for their professional careers," Associate Athletics Director for Academic Services/Senior Woman Administrator Charvi Greer said. "It was engaging and interactive while giving our student-athletes an opportunity to sharpen their conversational and networking skills sets. We will continue to provide programming and engagement opportunities that set our student-athletes up for future success."
