Day One Results
NEW ORLEANS - No. 10 Tulane Bowling opened the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Bowling Invitational with a strong performance, securing third-place. The Wave posted a 3-2 record, while knocking down 4,623 total pins for a 184.92 pin average.
"We had a pretty good day. We only had one set under 900 and our goal for this season was to try and keep above that," head coach Hayley Veitch said. "So, that was a pretty good start. The girls were working together. We wished that we could have stayed right a little longer, but it just depends on the teams that you follow, and we ended up getting pushed left a lot sooner than we wanted to."
The day's highlight came against last year's tournament champions No. 4 Sam Houston State when the Wave knocked down a game-high 249 pins, stringing together six-straight strikes. Despite the strong team effort, Tulane dropped its opening game against the Bearkats 997-954.
The Olive and Blue came back to win three of its next four. The Wave downed No. 25 Texas Southern 882-776 in game two, before besting Florida A&M 963-845 in game four, and beating No. 11 UAB 915-866 in game five. The squad's only other loss of the day came against No. 11 North Carolina A&T (972-909).
After one day of competition, Sam Houston State leads the team standings with 4,794 total pin-fall, followed by No. 17 Louisiana Tech with 4,662, and Tulane with 4,623. North Carolina A&T and No. 6 Stephen F. Austin round out the top five with 4,494 and 4,485, respectively.
The Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Bowling Invitational will resume tomorrow morning at 8:55 a.m. at Colonial Bowling Lanes. The teams will compete in five traditional matches on Saturday followed by three best 4-of-7 baker matches on Sunday. The teams' total pin-fall from day one and day two will determine their seeding in Sunday's bracket.
