NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane beach volleyball team prepares for the start of its eighth season this Saturday, opening preseason play in the Gulf Shores Collegiate Clash in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
"Competing in the fall is an invaluable part of our players' training and is essential for effective player and team development," sixth-year head coach Wayne Holly said. "This weekend will give us an opportunity to experiment with some of our pairings and measure our performance level against some good teams at this point in the season."
The Green Wave's six pairs are set to match-up against pairs from six teams this weekend: conference foes Florida State, LSU, Georgia State and Southern Mississippi, as well as Stetson and Spring Hill College.
The Florida State Seminoles were the national runner-up last season, finishing with a No. 2 national ranking, while LSU, Georgia State and Stetson checked in at No. 6, No. 12 and No. 18, respectively.
Tulane owned a 23-14 overall record in the 2018 season and finished ranked No. 15 in the Dig Magazine Collegiate Beach Volleyball poll.
The team's No. 1 duo, senior Madeline Mertz and sophomore Kaylie McHugh, finished last season with a 32-9 overall record after competing in the Bridgestone USA Volleyball Collegiate Beach Championships. The pair led the Green Wave to its most successful season on the sand, each earning Collegiate Beach All-American honors by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).
"Everything is about preparing our team to once again compete at a very high level in the spring," Holly added. "In that respect, this is a training exercise that will be productive and fun."
