Football's Winning Streak Snapped at Houston
Nov 15, 2018 | Football
After the two sides traded scores over the course of the first quarter and early part of the second, Houston (8-3, 5-2 American Athletic Conference) went on to score 27 unanswered points before the Green Wave (5-6, 4-3) got back on the board again.
Running back Darius Bradwell had 89 yards on the ground on 14 carries and a touchdown, as the Green Wave finished the day with 212 yards rushing and averaged 4.9 yards per carry against the Cougars. Corey Dauphine carried the ball 12 times for 51 yards for Tulane.
Quarterback Justin McMillan was 10-for-20 on the night for 147 yards and two interceptions. Terren Encalade led the Tulane wide receivers with 52 yards on two catches, with a long catch of 42 yards.
Linebacker Zachery Harris led all defenders with 13 total tackles, including a half sack and two tackles for loss. Marvin Moody was second among players with 10 tackles, with seven solo stops, while Taris Shenall grabbed the fourth interception of his career and first of the season.
Houston finished the game with 488 yards of total offense, with 298 yards rushing and 190 yards through the air. The Cougars had 24 first downs to Tulane's 18, just out-gaining the Green Wave in average yards per play at 6.3 to 5.4.
After Houston opened the scoring with a seven-play drive to take the lead, the Green Wave came back and needed just two plays to cover 62 yards for a score of their own. Starting at the Tulane 38, McMillan hooked up with Encalade for a 42-yard pickup and Bradwell did the rest, rumbling 20 yards for the score.
The drive took just 47 seconds off the clock, as it was the fourth scoring drive of just two plays for Tulane this season. The extra point was no good as the Cougars were up by one with 5:39 remaining in the first quarter.
Houston was able to score on their next possession to take a 14-6 lead, with Tulane getting the ball back with 4:21 left in the opening quarter. A heavy dose of Bradwell and Dauphine opened the drive with the two backs accounting for seven of the opening eight plays of the drive.
With the drive starting at the Tulane 34, the running attack was able to get all the way to the Houston 24-yard line, and a yard further to the 23, before the drive stalled out and Merek Glover came on to nail a 40-yard field goal to make it a 14-9 game.
Late in the third quarter, McMillan connected on a deep pass to wide receiver Brian Newman for 38 yards to get from the Tulane 44 to the Houston 18-yard line. While that play may have ended the quarter, the Green Wave opened the fourth with a 17-yard gain for Amare Jones, who went on to punch it in on the very next play.
Tulane went for two and McMillan took it in himself to make the score 41-17 Cougars with 14:28 left in the game.
The Green Wave will be back in action next Saturday, hosting the Navy Midshipmen at Yulman Stadium in the team's final home game of the season.
