Gutierrez Named Conference Freshman of the Week
Nov 19, 2018 | Women's Basketball
NEW ORLEANS – Following a week that saw her contribute all over the court in two Tulane victories, Erin Gutierrez has been named the American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Week, the league announced Monday.
Â
Gutierrez combined for 17 points, eight rebounds, eight assists and seven steals in Tulane wins over LSU and Washington last week. After playing just 10 minutes in her first game on November 8, Gutierrez recorded 51 combined minutes against the Tigers and Huskies.
Â
On Thursday at LSU, the Florida native dropped 9 points, added a team-high five steals and had four assists. Gutierrez's 9 points were second-most on the team, and she had a career high in nearly every category.
Â
Three nights later against Washington, she contributed 8 points including six clutch free throws in the game's final three minutes. She tallied four assists again, added a career-high six rebounds and had two steals.
Gutierrez is Tulane's first conference Freshman of the Week since current senior Meredith Schulte claimed the honor on Jan. 11, 2016. Gutierrez is now the fourth different Tulane player to earn the award since Tulane joined The American before the 2014-15 season.
Â
Gutierrez and the rest of the Green Wave will look to stay undefeated this weekend when they travel to San Diego to take on No. 18 Cal and Cleveland State in the University of San Diego Thanksgiving Tournament. Tulane faces Cal in its first game of the tournament on Friday at 6 p.m. central.
