HOLLAND, Michigan – Tulane sailing's freshman Ciara Rodriguez-Horan earned a final 14th-place finish on the water in the LaserPerformance Women's Singlehanded Nationals.
"Today was a great day of very windy sailing," head coach Charles Higgins said. "The results may not reflect how hard Ciara [Rodriguez-Horan] worked, but she performed as well as she could be expected to with the conditions and I'm very proud of her."
Rodriguez-Horan maintained a consistent standing in 14th after sailing the remaining six races on Sunday, totaling 184 points after 14 total races. One of just four freshmen among 18 sailors in the competition, Rodriguez-Horan finished five of her last few races in 14th place, while also earning one 16th place finish.
"Most of the races were the first 14 to 15 boats finishing very close together with a large gap behind them," Higgins added. "Ciara [Rodriguez-Horan] had fantastic starts all day and was near the front group for much of the initial legs, but the sailors with more experience in the Laser were always able to reel her back in by the end of the first half in each race."
The Green Wave representative recorded two top-ten finishes in day one of the regatta, checking in at ninth in the sixth and eighth races of the competition.
Stanford's Christina Sakellaris won the regatta, tallying 60 total points, followed by Jacksonville's Charlotte Rose in second with 61 points and Boston College's Sophia Reineke in third with 69 points.
Rodriguez-Horan finished ahead of sailors from Connecticut College, Wisconsin, Michigan State and British Columbia.
"Again, to come out as a freshman in our first year as a varsity program and finish 14th in the nation is a strong performance for Ciara [Rodriguez-Horan], and I know she'll continue to improve," Higgins said.
The Tulane sailing team is back in action on Nov. 16, competing in the ICSA Match Race in Balboa, California in its final regatta of the fall season.
