AFCA Release
Â
NEW ORLEANS – The American Football Coaches Association announced Tuesday that it has selected Tulane defensive backs coach Chris Hampton to participate in its 2019 35 Under 35 Coaches Leadership Institute in San Antonio, Texas, on January 6.
Â
The AFCA 35 Under 35 Coaches Leadership Institute is a prestigious program aimed at identifying and developing premier, future leaders in the football coaching profession. Selected participants are invited to attend the one-day institute that features a curriculum of interactive lectures focused on topics specifically tailored to emphasize leadership in the coaching profession, ethics, influential responsibilities, career progression, and family balance.
Â
Applicants were required to submit a resume, five references, and a 1,600-word article or five-minute live instructional video on an Offensive, Defensive, Special Teams, or position-specific topic of the applicant's choosing.
Â
With the Green Wave, Hampton has seen tremendous success for the defensive backs. This season saw defensive backs Roderic Teamer Jr. and Donnie Lewis Jr. earn Second Team All-Conference honors.
Â
The team also set an NCAA record with 20 pass breakups against ECU, and Tulane leads the nation in passes defended this season with 84 total and seve per game. Lewis and Thakarius Keyes rank fourth and 26th in the nation in passes defensed this year, respectively.
Â
In 2017, Hampton's cornerbacks limited opponents to 225.7 yards per game through the air, which ranked fourth in The American and in the top half of the NCAA. He coached First Team All-American Athletic Conference back Parry Nickerson, who was selected in the sixth round of the 2018 NFL Draft by the New York Jets.
Â
Nickerson also earned Second Team All-Conference honors during Hampton's first year on staff.
