Hurdlers Dominate in Day One of The American Indoor Track & Field Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The hurdlers stole the show in day one of the American Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships inside the Birmingham Crossplex, as junior Jessica Duckett, sophomore Brandi Hughes and freshman Kyah Loyd dazzled in the 60m hurdles prelims to qualify for tomorrow's final. Tulane heads into day two tied for sixth place with 21 points.
Duckett won her heat with a time of 8.50 while Hughes and Loyd finished first (8.54) and second (8.59), respectively, in their prelim heat. The women's 60m hurdles final begins at 11:55 a.m. tomorrow.
Junior Rebekah Markel nabbed a second-place finish in the women's pole vault final to earn Tulane eight points. Markel's mark of 3.99m only trailed that of Cincinnati's Brooke Catherine, who vaulted to a height of 4.09m.
Redshirt junior Lauren Bartels continued to show that she's one of the best distance runners in the conference, picking up a third-place finish in the 5000m with a time of 17:01.74. Bartels' performance, which was a new personal record, earned Tulane six points.
Freshman Pauline Helm earned the Green Wave three points after finishing sixth in the pentathlon. Helm posted a time of 9.05 in the 60m hurdles, a height of 1.56m - a new personal record - in the high jump, a distance of 8.54m in the shot put, a mark of 5.29m in the long jump and a time of 2:21.86 in the 800m.
Tulane's distance medley relay team placed sixth with a time of 12:05.12 and nabbed three points for the Green Wave. Wember earned one point for Tulane with her performance in the long jump, as she jumped to a height of 5.60m, setting a new personal record by topping her previous high mark of 5.49m (1/26/18).
Day two of the competition picks up tomorrow at 9:45 a.m., starting with the women's high jump, and finishes at 3:20 p.m. with the awards ceremony.
