Markel, Esmay's Event Wins Highlight Track & Field's Day at Louisiana Classics

LAFAYETTE, La. - Junior Rebekah Markel and senior Jacqueline Esmay each earned event wins on Friday to highlight Tulane track and field's first day at the Louisiana Classics in Lafayette, Louisiana.
Markel won the women's pole vault with a mark of 4.00m, earning her second consecutive win in the event. Two weekends ago at the Tulane Early Bird Twilight, Markel won the pole vault with a mark of 3.96m.
Esmay led the field in the women's hammer throw, winning the event with a mark of 55.08m and beating the second-place finisher by .75m. Earlier this season at the Tulane Early Bird Twilight, Esmay finished second in the hammer throw, throwing to a distance of 56.72.
Elsewhere in the field events, freshman Kristina Leggas finished second in the pole vault with a mark of 3.67m while junior Rose Brutkiewicz finished sixth, posting a height of 3.52m. Junior Ethan Rodriguez and freshman James Thomas Watson finished 11th (48.13m) and 17th (44.44m) in the men's javelin throw, respectively.
On the track, junior Jessica Duckett set a new outdoor personal record in the 200m dash. Her second-place time of 24.69 topped her previous best mark of 24.91, which she set at last year's Louisiana Classics.
Sophomore Maya Harewood finished third in the 200m with a time of 24.77 while freshman Kyah Loyd rounded out the top 10, finishing tenth with a time of 25.15.
On the men's side, sophomore Raymond Kibet finished sixth in the 200m with a time of 21.73. The time is just .15 seconds shy of his outdoor personal best.
UP NEXT
Tulane gets back to work tomorrow, starting at 10 a.m. with the men's discus thrown and women's long jump. The Green Wave compete through the day and finish with the women's 4x400m relay at 7:15 p.m to conclude the Louisiana Classics.
