NEW ORLEANS – Tulane bowling goes for a conference championship this weekend at the Southland Bowling League Championship Friday through Sunday at USA Bowl in Dallas. The fifth-seeded Green Wave open play against fourth-seeded Stephen F. Austin.
The tournament begins with matches at 8:30 a.m. Friday and continues at 1:30 p.m., with Saturday matches set to begin 8:30 a.m. The championship match set for 9 a.m. Sunday, as the Green Wave look for their first conference bowling title.
Tulane matches will be streamed via Facebook Live. Featured matches will be streamed live by Inside Bowling. Full information and the tournament bracket about the SBL Championship can be found on the tournament central page.
Tulane enters the tournament as the No. 5 seed and ranked ninth in the country in the National Tenpin Coaches Association poll. The Green Wave open against fourth-seeded Stephen F. Austin Friday. This season, the Wave is 3-2 against the Ladyjacks.
Each match will follow a best-of-three format: Teams will bowl one standard five-person game for total pinfall, then five baker games for total pinfall. If one team wins both the traditional game and baker games, they advance. If both teams split the standard and baker games, they will move on to a best-of-seven series of baker games. Teams will change lane pairs after each game.
For the first time in NCAA bowling history, automatic qualification to the NCAA tournament will be given to the winning team from qualified conferences' championships, including the Southland Bowling League. Last season marked the third consecutive year that the Southland made up half of the then-eight-team NCAA field.
In the opening round, top-seeded Arkansas State faces eighth-seeded Monmouth, second-seeded Vanderbilt plays seventh-seeded Louisiana Tech and third-seeded Sam Houston State plays sixth-seeded Valparaiso.
Last season Tulane reached the quarterfinals of the double elimination tournament for the first time in program history. The Green Wave won three straight matches in the elimination bracket before falling to SFA in the consolation field's semifinal.
