NEW ORLEANS - Tulane beach volleyball will look to get back on track this weekend when it travels to Miami Beach, Florida, to compete in the Surf 'N' Turf Invitational, hosted by FIU.
After suffering their first three conference losses of the season one week ago, the Green Wave seek a shot at redemption this weekend, playing five duals across the two-day competition, including four against Coastal Collegiate Sports Association opponents - No. 9 Georgia State, No. 18 FAU, No. 7 Florida State and No. 12 FIU.
QUOTE
"We're excited for the opportunity to bounce back from last weekend and compete fearlessly against a great field of competition. The schedule is giving us a second chance to show our strength against some conference opponents. Translating last week's lessons into improved performance will be key to our success." -Head Coach Wayne Holly
BACK IN ACTION
Tulane faces four nationally-ranked teams - all four of which are conference opponents - this weekend, including three top-15 programs, marking its most difficult slate of opponents to date.
The action starts with a doubleheader against two CCSA opponents on Friday. The Green Wave open their weekend at 11:50 a.m. Friday against Georgia State before a 4:50 p.m. showdown against FAU.
Saturday's tripleheader starts early, with Tulane playing conference foe Florida State at 6:50 a.m. The Wave conclude the weekend in the afternoon, facing CCSA opponent and host FIU at 12 p.m. and TCU at 2 p.m.
Tulane defeated TCU, 3-2, earlier this season at Fight in the Fort in Fort Worth, Texas, and lost to FAU by a score of 3-2 last weekend, but will face Georgia State, Florida State and FIU for the first time this year.
LAST TIME OUT
The Green Wave clinched their 10th victory of the season with a 4-1 win against Spring Hill, but lost four duals last weekend at the Tiger Beach Challenge in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Tulane earned its first three conference losses of the year, losing to College of Charleston, FAU and LSU, in addition to a defeat against Stetson.
Senior Madeline Mertz and sophomore Kaylie McHugh went undefeated in day one of the competition, taking down top pairs from Charleston, Spring Hill and Stetson. Senior Christina McAfee - making her season debut - and freshman Morgan Esters - making her collegiate debut - played together in flight five in the dual against Spring Hill, winning in straight sets by a score of 21-18, 23-21.
