No. 22 Men's Tennis Falls at Vanderbilt, 4-1
Mar 4, 2018 | Men's Tennis
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The 22nd-ranked Tulane men's tennis tennis team closed its Tennessee road trip with a 4-1 setback at No. 34 Vanderbilt on Sunday afternoon.
The Green Wave found themselves in a tight battle for the coveted doubles point, as all three courts came down to the final games. The Commodores earned a 6-4 victory at the No. 2 spot, as the other two matches were tied six-all and moved on to tiebreakers. Tulane (6-4) was unable to capitalize on its serve opportunities on court one, dropping the tiebreak, 8-6, and surrendering the doubles point.
Vanderbilt (12-2) used its doubles momentum to create a steeper hill for the Green Wave to climb, taking the first set on five of six singles courts. The Commodores earned a straight set win at the No. 6 spot, but senior and 24th-ranked Constantin Schmitz cut the deficit in half, 2-1, with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 comeback victory over 50th-ranked Cameron Klinger at the No. 1 position.
Tulane was able to counter and swing the momentum back in its favor with four second-set wins, but Vanderbilt clamped down, before closing out the No. 4 and No. 5 singles matches in three sets, respectively, to clinch the match and its seventh straight victory.
Tulane returns home for the first of four straight home matches, beginning on Wednesday, March 7 against American Athletic Conference foe Memphis. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. (CT) at the City Park Pepsi Tennis Center.
