STANFORD, Calif. – No. 18 Tulane beach volleyball went 2-1 in day one of the Stanford Invitational Friday, topping Boise State and San Jose State before falling to No. 14 Stanford to conclude the tripleheader. The Green Wave's record moves to 4-2 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
#18 Tulane 4, Boise State 1
Boise State jumped out to an early lead, earning a win in flight five to start the dual. Junior Briana Correa and freshman Lauren Orlich lost in straight sets, 21-18, 21-12.
The Green Wave, however, responded in a big way, winning the following four flights en route to a 4-1 win.
Tulane's No. 3 and 4 pairs both won in straight sets. Senior Lan Nguyen and freshman Rio Frohoff took down Boise State's No. 3 pair, 21-16, 21-17, while junior Anna Chin and freshman Gabriella Becerra, playing as the Green Wave's No. 4 pair, won 21-13, 21-12, capturing a flight win.
Sophomore Tarin Mergener and freshman Ashley Delgado sealed the dual win in flight two, going three sets before earning the 21-23, 21-17, 15-11 victory. Tulane's top pair of senior Madeline Mertz and sophomore Kaylie McHugh recorded the fourth flight win of the dual, defeating Boise State's No. 1 pair, 19-21, 21-15, 15-12.

The Green Wave struggled early in the second dual of day one, falling behind San Jose State, 2-0. Correa and Orlich, playing out of flight five, went the distance, but ultimately fell, 20-22, 21-19, 11-15, and Tulane's No. 4 duo of Chin and Becerra lost 20-22, 21-19, 11-15.
Nguyen and Mergener, playing together as the third pair for the first time this season, restored order by toppling San Jose State's No. 3 duo in straight sets, 21-9, 21-18.
The Green Wave's roll continued with Mertz and McHugh winning in straight sets, 21-14, 21-10, to even the dual at two.
With all eyes focused on flight three, Frohoff and Delgado, playing together in the second slot for the first time this season, battled against San Jose State's No. 2 pair. Tulane's duo won the first set, 21-18, before dropping the second, 21-17.
In the dual-deciding third set, Tulane and San Jose State exchanged points, tying at eight before the Green Wave extended a 10-8 lead. Frohoff and Delgado sealed the set with a 5-4 run to clinch the second dual win of the day.

The final dual of the day proved to be the Green Wave's toughest challenge. Stanford took control and did not look back, winning flights five, four, three and two - in that order - to put Tulane in a 4-0 hole.
Mertz and McHugh, however, would not let Stanford complete the sweep. Tulane's No. 1 duo went three sets against Stanford top pair of Kathryn Plummer and Sunny Villapando, battling it out to prevent a sweep.
Mertz and McHugh won the first set, 21-19, but dropped the second, 21-18, forcing the decisive third set. The Green Wave's duo regrouped to win the flight, taking the third set by a score of 15-12.
Mertz and McHugh finished with Tulane's top pair record of the day, going 3-0.

The Green Wave roll on with the competition tomorrow, facing Cal at 10:30 a.m. before squaring off with Arizona State for the second time this season at 1:30 p.m. in day two of the Stanford Invitational.
