Apr 19, 2018 | Women's Tennis
DALLAS - The No. 9 seed Tulane had its five-match winning streak snapped in a 4-1 defeat against top-seeded and 21st-ranked UCF in the 2018 American Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Championships on Thursday afternoon at Turpin Stadium.
The Green Wave (13-11) struggled to grab early momentum in doubles, as the Knights (19-3) earned quick breaks at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions, respectively. UCF refused to give the Wave an inch before closing out both matches by 6-1 scores to clinch the first team point of the match.
Tulane remained in the fight in singles despite dropping the first set on five of six courts. The Knights scored a pair of straight-set wins within moments of one another at courts two and four to extend their advantage to 3-0 in the overall match.
Junior Elena Muller proved to be the bright spot and exhibited great confidence at the No. 5 spot with family cheering her on for the second day in a row in her hometown. After winning the first set, 6-3, she jumped out to a 5-0 advantage in the second frame before closing it out, 6-2, to put the Green Wave on the scoreboard and cut the deficit to 3-1.
Tulane made a late push in the second set on the three remaining courts, but could not extend the match any further as UCF clinched it with another straight-set win on court three, ending the Wave's first season under head coach Maria Brito.
